The change also changes the positioning of the connector tabs on the lower arms. The 73/ later bar goes through the hollow K member. The older 72/ earlier goes under the K. They are differently shaped.
I guess if you were to fab the mountings for the bar under the K, and had the correct tabs on the lower arms, you could use a 72 bar on a 73/ later car.
