To route larger wires and less failsafe into the cabin is not a good plan.
If you would put the headlights, blower motor, any other high draw circuits, on relays, you could install a lesser than OEM gauge fusible link. This smart plan requires deeper pockets though.

I am in the middle of routing stuff like my MSD, electric vacuum pump, fan controller, etc. to a Painless auxillary fuseblock. My electric fans and headlights are on relays.
I have also bypassed the ammeter and added an alternator wire around with a fusible link.
I was going to run straight wire through the bulkhead and change out all the connectors for brand new ones. After dunking all connectors in the nice used harness I bought with vinegar and salt solution and then neutralizing in baking soda/water, they came out looking great, so I made a new fusble link, and packed every connector with dialectric grease. Between taking load off the system a thorough cleaning they I think they should be fine.
