Yes, you can make it work. No- it's not a bolt on. We didn't have to mod the p/s bracket almost at all. I used my '77, or maybe '73 brackets, should be more like what yours came w/. Had to mod the alt big time. In the end we settled w/ a slight shave on the alt that could get done in minutes, a shade off the boss on the head, and that was how we got the '72-'87 alt to fit. Honestly sounds like you're having better luck. Yeah, the bolt holes aren't exactly all the same. Some reworking should be expected, the heads and timing cover have different physical dimensions.
