any thoughts on why I would have oil in there

That would be a perfect candidate for my carpet cleaner turned oil vacuum.
Just and old carpet cleaner that I reduced the hose size down to 1/2 so then I can spray or soak spots with soaps or light solvents like WD40 and vacuum them up without making a mess everywhere else. :D
