Stop in for a cup of coffee
Oh boy, it's gonna be a long night.
My brother-in-law who has late stage liver cancer was put to the top of the transplant list on Thursday after his tumors began to rapidly grow. They did the bone scan and blood work to be sure the cancer hadn't spread beyond the liver and told us to be on stand-by for a donor. They figured it would be a few weeks at best due to the lack of donors and 6 other hospitals with patients at the top of their lists but don't be more than 20 minutes from home ever during this time.
Well, I guess the 4th of July weekend creates the opportunity for donors because they called 35 minutes ago and said they have liver. My wife ran to get her brother and take him to the hospital for the transplant. They have 1 hour to get there and the surgery is an 18 hour procedure. I called his parents in Alabama and let them know while I stay here with my daughter and hold down the fort.
2 am on a Saturday night during the 4th of July weekend. I told my wife to be extra careful driving, watch for impaired drivers and if you get pulled over by the Police, don't mince words. Tell them exactly what's going on and let them know you have less than an hour to get to the hospital.
