I thought you could put a cam snout extension and an LA timing cover on a magnum? That would allow you to have a mechanical fuel pump while keeping the stock cam. Although for performance reasons, regrinding the cam would be a good idea which would still be cheaper than buying a new cam. Installing a mechanical pump seems like less of a hassle than an electric pump with a return and regulator.

I've never messed with a 5.9, so I can't speak from experience, but I'm pretty sure you can make a mech pump work with the stock cam.

You can get magnum cams with the adapter parts for the mechanical pump and use either 318 or 360 LA style timing cover and water pump.
Pretty sure you can get the magnum roller cam with the snout already there also. (not positive on that one)
I got my roller regrind from Oregon Cam Grinders for about 150 and was even able to use the stock magnum pushrods.

I will never go back to a mechanical pump, but not all electrics need a regulator and a return.
The electric I just installed is called a High volume/Low pressure and puts out right at 6 psi and I put in a orifice limited return.
The electric I had before this didn't have a return or regulator either one, and I drove it for years like that.
I like being able to turn the key and have it fire right up. :D (even after sitting)
