Much easier for the novice on thin metal is to clamp the panel in place and just do spot tacks every few inches and keep working around the panel until you have a continuous seam. Usually you can use a little more heat this way. Get a cheap pair or reading glasses to wear under your helmet will help and so will a drop light with a magnetic base that you can place right next to the weld sight.
