904 transmission id help

I bought the adapter ring from a member here (Charrlie_S or such) a few years ago for ~$20. Engines changed to the bigger crank snout hole ~1967 or 68, both small blocks and slants. People say you only need to swap the front shaft to use the later torque converter in your 65 tranny (then don't need adapter ring). I have never done so.
