Finally got the engine into the Dart and ran across an issue with the PS pump pulley alignment. Seems to be off by about a quarter inch, did some research and it seems I have all the right parts in all the right places. On a 360 LA block, non A/C, and an aluminum water pump....does this look right or can someone spot something I did wrong? Pump came off the original slant 6 that was in the car so I suspect it may be slightly different or possibly the rear bracket that came off a 318 parts car is bent? Thanks in advance.

You and a lot of other people have asked this question. This misalignment is very common. You might want to search the many Threads on this subject. I have an "A" and a "B" body Plymouth. They have a different style pump, but both have alignment issues. My "B" car is about 3/16" off.

Your 1/4" misalignment is pretty far off. There is no obvious answer, but I hope you can get it aligned better. I think most people just live with it.

For some reason I can't edit my previous post. As I look closer at your photo, could you put some 1/4" spacers on each bolt between the bracket and the pump? This would move your pump in the correct direction.

How do the alternator and fan belts line up to each other?

Are you sure you have the proper crank pulley?

Here's our set up on a 71 Valiant. Originally a 318 A/C car, now a 360 non A/C set up.

We have the other style ps pump, and I notice that your shaft/nose between the pump and pulley are much longer than ours. That may be the cause of your problem, maybe you need to find one from a v-8 that may have a shorter nose/snout on the front of the pump for the pulley.

ps pump, pulley, and brackets never move from one engine to another when the engines aren't identical. One could fill a grocery cart with the various parts Chrysler used here.
Hunt a 360 with that same pump to get brackets and pulleys you need.

That's a saginaw pump you have....krazycuda has the federal pump. That may be what you need. Both pumps bolt up to the block, but use different brackets (I think).

Thanks, I could try that, have to do some experimenting.

The alternator/waterpump/crank belt lines up perfectly so the crank pulley should be good.

I suspect that is the case. I grew up a "troll" in Michigan in the 70's and remember the "beat to fit, paint to match" mentality. I may need to go back to the donor for the brackets and grab the pump to check that one or hit the MOPAR swap meet coming up this weekend.

Our pump is the original one for that car, a factory 318. I think any pump from a 70 and later small block will do...

This alignment is not to be treated lightly. If that belt flips off at speed and gets tangled in the other belt, and flips that one off too, will you notice your water temp creeping up?
I lost an a 340 like that back in the early 70s. It was still on warranty; 5&50.The replacement engine wasn't nearly as powerful, and I sold that Swinger shortly afterwards.

Specifically the snout on the pump looks abnormally long for that application.
Might be on the right track about it not being the pump for it.

That is totally messed up.
The filler neck should be pointing straight up, when the belt is on. I do not see any way that can happen with that bracket. I do preferthe Saginaw pump to the Federal.

And my 70 Duster pump has a much shorter snout, and IIRC the front bracket is flat.
That pump must be off a Cordoba or Diplomat, or an A/C car,IDK.
I tried to add this to the above post, but the program wouldn't let me.

Very good observation. The leaning 6 shooter stood that pump upright.

Look at the OP's photo.. the PS pump is at an angle relative to the crank pulley! The PS pulley is nowhere close to being in the same plane as the crank pulley. At the very least, one or both bracket parts is bent badly.

oh, I know, I know...YES
but only because I was running powersteering and that failed at the same time, putting me on a heightened state of alert

it looks like it might just be the wrong pulley on that pump?
