8 3/4 gear setup for beginner?

Do you guys recommend a beginner putting new gears in. I have done other stuff like install a crank and bearings, valve body mods. just never tackled a rear gear.

Any write ups you could point me towards. I want to do this over the winter.

Richmond Gear has a DVD that maybe helpfull. I wouldn't trust some of the BS on You Tube. Also you will need some special tools for setting pinion depth or its a lot of guessing and thats no good. Once the gears are run in the wear pattern is set and you can't go back so it real important that everything is within spec's before you run it
 
I agree, there is alot of info out there, I always try to do everything if I can, also depending on what style of diff you have, i would get the crush sleave eliminator from Dr Diff, makes life a lot easier
 
Wanting to challenge myself to build one, Buying the tools etc. if you have a reputable builder in your area, you would be ahead in $ and aggravation, to farm it out. your choice.

its a 742 case so no crush sleeve. and i already have a depth gauge.

Perfect, I'm not saying these type of things are easy, but too many people act like it's rocket science, and just pay big bucks and get it done by someone else. Like I said, go for it, that's the best part about this hobby is learning to do these projects.
 
watch all the videos on youtube and go for it! take your time, and double check things. I did my 742 with US gear / Strange gears-made in USA-and it is quiet, the previous gears I had done by a good shop were noisy-they did not take the time I did to get it perfect
 
If I have one together do a few things before disassembly.

Run a pattern at 4 spots, this can show condition of gear set for use later and pictures if sold.

Check backlash.

Remove ring gear and refit to check runout.

Punch mark your left and right caps so they go back in the same way.

Don't rush and do it when you won't be disturbed by anyone. Maybe some pleasant music if it helps you concentrate.
 
I did one with no previous experience and it turned out good. I gathered information from internet and read up a lot before I started. I was also lucky that I could borrow all the tools needed. It took me probably ten times longer or more than it would someone with experience. You will need patience doing the project and reading up on all the info but with that It can be done by a beginner.
