The vice president of the company I work for has a friend that has 2 340's that were pulled out of the cars in the mid 70's. One is a 1970 and he thinks the other is 1973??? Both are complete from carb to pan ( not sure about exhaust manifolds). Both will need to be gone through.
Any suggestions on what one of those would be worth today?
Thanks in advance, Dennis.

I'd throw a number out there of round $1200-$1800 but I may be a little high.I wouldn't pay that much for one but a lot of people would. Maybe even more. Naturally the 70 would be worth a little more than the 73 but the 70 would have a forged crank. There's a fair chance the 73 does too but not an absolute. The heads would be a determining factor too. The 70 would probably have the X-heads while the 73 would have the J and have smaller valves.

It's a question that get's asked a lot. And really only has one answer:

Depends entirely on the buyer.

It's going to be worth more to a guy looking to date code his H car. Then it is to a guy who just wants to be able to say he has a 340 under the hood. Having to go through them means they really aren't "known" to be good. Who's going to pay several thousand dollars for an engine that might need bearings, or valves, or whatever else? While 340's are rare. Their status is simply because they were hot rod engines back in the day. A stroker 360 these days is very easy and (relatively) cheap to build. Which is why a lot of guys go that route.

All the magic, mystery and power that came with the legendary 340, can easily be had with any small block these days. Making them more valuable to collectors or date code restorers. At least in my view.

Check to see if the '70 block has TA in the casting number.

Can you post both partial VINs as well?

oh boy, here we go again...340s are getting hard to find in some areas
so $1000 plus easily.

Pic's upsidedown and pink. But you can clearly see the block casting number on the side. And the -340-. That's where you'll find it.

Even with headers you should be able to see it. It's usually fairly obvious. Assuming the block is decently clean.

340 would also be stamped on the front of the engine right below the driver side head surface.

The only other information I have is that the 70 has "X" heads (2.02) I have not seen any of them or pictures yet... Thanks for the info on price range! I have no idea what the guy is looking to get for them...

1000 bucks? what have yall been smokin? Yall are farkin carzy.

If you want one, a thousand bucks is not unheard of around here. Supply and demand..........

For a complete '70 340, not 360.
.. around here manifolds and air cleaner can be as high as $400 each and an original bore block up to $500.
You are very lucky if that is too high in your area Rusty.

I just picked my 72 340 up complete carb to pan with exhaust manifolds and spare set of 360 heads for $1500 here in Indiana. A little fresh in up and good to go.

I have to agree with RRR when a complete running 360 from someone like LKQ runs $600 or so with a warranty, or $2-300 running from a 3rd party. Unless it is YOUR numbers matching engine to match your complete number match car it isn't worth it.

That $1,000 core (not to mention machine work, performance parts etc) goes a long way toward a hell of a performance piece, you're basically looking at 408 money when you're all said and done, for a 'mild' non numbers matching 340

Without exh manifolds
70 would be in the 800-950 range
73 would be 500-750

JMO and worth less than you paid for it! :)

Well, as mentioned, a guy looking to date code a 340 car, or just to say "it has a 340" they'll pay.
However, as performance goes, 360 magnums and 360 LA's are all over to be had in great running condition for 300-350 bucks, it's a better route other than to pay 1200 bucks for a 340 needing rebuilt. Actually, a 318 magnum with a 4bbl slapped on it is about equal in performance as a '73 340 4bbl.
