Budget Dash Resto
I decided to redo the dash in my other 67 Valiant 100 and post the process. It cost about $25 and about 4 hours of your time,less if you don't think you need to strip the paint off. I did this same process to my other Valiant Signet minus stripping the paint and I was very pleased with the outcome.
The supplies
3/8 drill
3m or equal quality paint stripping wheel
wire wheel,stiff...for rust
med grit sand paper
AutoZone(Rustoleum) rusty metal primer,self etching primer,gloss white (if your spraying the back to reflect light) and (Duplicolor) Trim paint
dust mask
Autozone brake cleaner (residue remover)
eye protection
It took me close to 2 hours to strip the dash out side with the stripper wheel
It took about another hour to really get the scale rust gone near the fuse box and glovebox due to mouse nest/urine
I sprayed down the dash inside and out with the brake cleaner washing out all of the paint dust and let it dry before I hit it with a dusting coat of self etching primer on the outside and rusty metal primer a little thicker on the back and especially in the problem areas and hard to reach areas. It's getting painted white.
I applied the self etching primer (outside) with 2 light coats and gloss white (inside) and let it sit over night to dry.
Next day: I laid some cardboard on the grass as my back drop and sprayed a light coat of (Trim Paint) on the outside as a base,let it set 10-15 mins then started misting it in strokes close to 10" or more away to get the krinkle/spackle look and repeated until I was happy with the result
I also taped off the ash tray and sprayed that and column cover in between spraying the dash and allowing tac time between coats. A good majority of my dash is going to be hidden by the speedo,dash trim,ignition,defrost vents and glove box door. The cost in material was about $20-$25 and about 4 hours labor
I'm leaving it dry in the sun today and may put another coat on tomorrow and post pics after that dries and I assemble the dash for installation.
This process isn't an exact duplicate of the original crinkle paint they used but it's about as close as you will get for $20 and from spray cans from AutoZone or other parts stores. I haven't experimented with any other brands and this one worked well for me. The down side is the trim paint only comes in flat black so if your dash is any other color you will have to find another avenue. What do you guys think?
