If doing my 69 now. I used 220, 500, 1000 and 1200 wet paper with light handy oil, not water. To take off the anodized coating I used the yellow cap, heavy duty eay off oven cleaner. You can tell the costing is coming off by all the black slurr that appears when sanding. My tailpanel had the original paint still on it. The pane has some dents. I'm doing a formula S tailpanel treatment.

Here is my base 69 tail panel that I did as a Formula S panel. I found a NOS fish emblem that will go on instead of the Formula S emblem. My own touch. To redo the the bright work this is what I did. I used Easy Off oven cleaner to take off the anodized coating using 220 wet sandpaper and using thin oil not water. Once cleaned up, I went with the following wet paper, 500, 1000, 1200, 2000 grit paper using light oil. Then I went to Harbor Frieght and bought the buffing kit that comes with white and red rouge. Put it on my drill and away it went to this. I have quite a bit of hours into it..........But I wanted to give it a try. I'm happy. Still need to do the letters and install the fish emblem.
