I would like to touch up my instrument cluster. I'm a bit intimidated of removing it from the dash though. I have a new woodgrain decal for it. Is the old one also a decal? If so, will it come off? How have you guys gone on to do a project like this?

I'm intimidated because I'm scared to break something along the way when removing it. On my strong side I do have patience and could probably go very slow and carefully.

Taking the cluster out is pretty easy, take the screws out, remove column cover and lower column, reach in the back and start unplugging the plugs, red and black wire and push the tab on the speedo cable at the gauge and it should pop out and repeat to install. The plugs can't be switched but the red/black wires can be but the board is marked red/black or just bolt them together and wrap them up real good and add an aftermarket volt meter.

My cluster is already out of the car and I plan on the same thing I think the old one was a paint treatment but I think if you are patient you can get it out.

edit again GRRRRRR, First step in inst' panel removal is disconnect the neg' battery cable. The complete R&R is in factory service manuals. Many of those are free downloads.

Thanks guys! I suspected that it was a paint treatment. So would I basically clean and prep the area and place the decal over? Could that be done without even removing the cluster?

I have to think it would be much easier without the steering wheel in the way. In the car seems worse than hanging wallpaper in my mind. Laying face up on a table has got to be the better route.
I aint tried in the car so...

Although I found it a pain to take the cluster out (four times) of my 72 demon. Once out , much easier to clean up and repair. Think that would also be better for a decal application. If you have dirt under lens covers, lighting problems or gauge issues with your panel you can take care of it all at once. ( and not do it multiple times like me )
Yote

You guys are right. I just have to bite the bullet in gently remove it.

tilt it out from the top out first and like redfish said....disconnect the battery

I got it of from ebay. "Plymouth Duster woodgrain decal".
