Is it perfectly ok to use off the shelf oil with a flat tappet cam if I use the zddp additive. Hate to order oil but will if needed. Was going to order some Brad Penn reason I ask I'm getting ready to break a new cam in. I will add cam break in to oil just wondered after that

Joe Gibbs oil..got more then enough additive in it..only oil I use in the duster !!!

Five ZDDP ZddPlus Anti-Wear Engine Oil Additive Zinc and Phosphorus Featured | eBay

Been using this stuff for many years....add it to a name brand 10w-30......I got many flat tappet motors running...Look at my signature...all flat tappet cams with 10w-30 and Dzzp...Or you can use the fancy oil named above....I just bought a box of 5 since I go thru a bit of oil....I add it directly into the 5 qt jug.....shake rattle and roll........

I have been running Mystik JT8 diesel super heavy duty engine oil, it has plenty of zinc and phosphorus. Best diesel oil you can buy exceeds API CI4 spec Rotella T only meets CI4 spec.
best part is a 2 gal jug cost $33.00 makes it $4.00 a quart. Can't use it with cats, but who runs them anyway.

Mobil1 15W50 has over 1200ppm ZDDP, and it's available off the shelf at O'Reilly's.

I don't like additives because 1) you forget, and 2) when you top off the oil you don't get any.

Won't be long and ALL the diesel oils will have reduced zinc. Rosella is already reduced, and th others WILL follow.

OP. You are better off buying an oil that is engineered with the right stuff for your application. Oil is not as simple as it looks, and there are plenty of junk cams and engines out there to prove it.

Probably just get some Brad Penn local speed shop sells for 65.99 case not bad at all. On cam break in may use off the shelf oil and some additive since I'll have to change soon after

I think the minimum is about 800 ppm, but don't quote me on that.

It also matters how much spring pressure you run and how aggressive that is.

Just for the record and posterity, too much zinc can be a problem too. Zinc is a HP killer.

That's why adding zinc is not the best idea, if you are looking to maximize power.

Schneider Cams Formula 2 for standard oil. Use half a bottle at each oil change. Been running it in my solid lifter race motors for years.

With all the threads and web pages I've looked at. (Pause and face palm)
I did not know this.
IIRC someone gave a link to a web site that supposedly had zinc listing for oils by brand.
I discounted that because I assumed oil manufactures change things over time.
What you have said about Mobil 1 surprises me since
1. I believe some new cars specify synthetic oil. (I really don't keep up with that.)
2. It was my understanding that zinc has been taken out of oils intended for new cars because of catalytic converters.
Therefore, it does surprise me that any oil intended for new car has zinc it.
Now, that being said, I'm glad to hear it.
I've been running Mobil 1 for 15 years in an daily driven 86 318 with no trouble.
And only in the last few years I've started adding STP just to be "safe" because it has zinc in it.

Here's what I think.
Only high lift cams might cause problems.
Us people with mushy factory cams probably don't have much to worry about.

For engine break in I use an oil that already has the proper additives in it. Later if you wish to use an external additive, okay.

has anyone tried Royal Purple HPS it supposedly has all the right stuff in it .

Question....How does the right stuff get in the oil?....added at the refinery?,,,,,I don't know..just asking....Or is the zinc crap occur naturally in crude?
