What other rear ends will work with my Dart?
I have a 67 Dart. I would like to swap out the rear end. What other rear ends will fit? Doesn't have to be a Mopar Rear end. I would like Posi and a larger lug pattern as I have the smaller 5 lug 4 1/4 I believe. I am looking for maybe a Chevy lug pattern of 4 3/4.
A mopar rear would be great too if anyone has good suggestions.
Thanks,
Mark
first thing to check when swapping other rear axles into your dart is,,, pinion offset ,,,of the housing you will use as compared to your stock housing ,, you want the pinion offset to be as close to your stock set up as possible -- so your driveshaft does not run at a weird angle .
having said that here are some measurements so you can compare them and make your decision on whether to go this route or find a A-body 8-1/4 or 8-3/4 or have a custom housing built
A body width --- axle flange to axle flange 58-5/8 inches approx. --- axle flange to center line of pinion,,, passenger side 28-3/16 inches,,, driver side 30-7/16 inches -- spring perches 43 inches on center.--- small bolt pattern
1965 -66 Mustang 8 inch ( weak axles ) and 1975-80 Granada/Monarch drum brake 8 and 9 inch axles width -- axle flange to axle flange 57-1/4 inches approx. . ---- axle flange to center line of pinion ,,, passenger side 28-1/2 inches ,,, driver side 28-13/16 -- spring perches 43 inches on center -- 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern.
1977-80 Lincoln Versaille 9 inch axle a bit wider due to disc brake thickness
1967-70 Mustang/ Cougar 8 and 9 inch axles width -- axle flange to axle flange 59-1/4 inches approx. -- axle flange to center line of pinion ,, passenger side 29-1/2 inches ,,,, driver side 29-3/4 inches ---- spring perches 43 inches on center -- 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern.
1970-74 Maverick/ Comet 8 inch axle width -- axle flange to axle flange 56-5/16 inches approx. --- axle flange to center line of pinion ,,, passenger side 28-1/2 inches ,,, driver side 28-3/16 inches --- spring perches 43 inches on center --- 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern.
these measurements will vary by about 1/16 inch due to production tolerances
in the above posts there seems to be confusion concerning 8.8 rear axles which have rear cover and the 8 inch rear axle which has a drop out center section,,, 2 completely different rear axles.,,,, late model ( 1968-80 ) 8 and 9 inch 28 spline axles are good to about 450-hp
