very basic question on paint.

-
As bad as the first coat I put on looked, that is how nice the 2nd coat looks. Heck, I may have found a new profession (yea, right). I will be putting on the 3rd coat, directly. I do not think any additional coats of paint will be necessary. Then a 24 hours cure and on to Cut and Buff
You'll have trouble with a cut and buff on SS metallic

I am reading the product data sheet and they say start with 2000 followed by 3000 grit. it does say that aggressive sanding can distort metallic appearance.
Maybe I should only go with 2500 and 3000 grit and thin I was going to use the Meguirar's Ultra cut compound#106 and then #26 hi tech yellow wax.
What do you think.

Also would you go with gloss or matte black decals. ie stripes

If you cut and buff a single stage metallic, you run the risk of needing to repaint it again.

Just running compound on it without sanding, can screw it up. You may get lucky, but don't say that you weren't warned.

Feel like I am damned if I do and damned if I don't

I parked the car in a neighbors garage last night (he is out of the country). This way I did not go into the garage and touch it, all night, to see if it hardened.
I brought it back early this morning.
I can safely say DAMN, I DO GOOD WORK
I am ordering a set of decals for it today. It was always gold. A lousy paint job over bondo up to 1/2" thick.
Now it is a fairly nice paint job over metal and touched of filler here and there.
Except for the roof. it was rusted to look like the surface of the moon. Originally came with a vinyl top, which causes the metal roof below it to rust like hell. So I had to do a build up of filler on it. Someplaces it maybe as much as 1/4" thick. I tried to not put a build up but I failed 4 times trying it that way. Now it looks FANTASTIC

IF YOU DO NOT BELIEVE ME, JUST ASK ME

Congratulations on doing it yourself and doing it correctly. Show us some pictures of your work

I parked it in the neighbors garage. I brought it home to work on it, but stopped at the pain store first. The woman there told me to PUT IT BACK IN THE GARAGE AND DO NOT TOUCH IT FOR THE NEXT WEEK. So I put it back in the garage and will not touch it for at least a couple days. I will post some pictures when I put the bumpers, door handles, locks and mirror back on her.

She does look sweet

These are not the best photos The paint is curing nicely and feels much nicer that a couple days ago.
It may not need to be cut and buffed. I am thinking of just using a clay bar. The First (Top) picture with the gold gas cap was what I did when I painted it last year. I never got the gun set up properly
The other two were taken today

I doubt I will need to cut OR buff the car. The paint seems to be settling down as it fully cures. I will use the clay bar for any cleanup and a good coat of was.
When I was a kid, my father use to have me 'Blue Corral" his car ever year. What ever happened to them?

I hate to say this and I hope it's just the pic but the color around the door seem and going back around the rear fender look different.

My hat is off to anyone that takes on a job like this, much respect!

I noticed that too. I believe it is the reflections from the lemon tree that is to my left when I was taking the pic.
I am really pleased with how it turned out. After I finished the paint last year, a very poor job, if I say so myself, I saw all the little flaws in the body work. Combined with the poor paint I had to correct it. Of course I need to wait for winter here so the temperature in the garage is ok.

This time, I spent a few weeks correcting (what I thought) all the flaws from last year.
Now I do another inspection, I found I correct a great deal of the defects, but not all of them.
But the paint looks so good, I do not think I care about the defects this time around.

Glad to hear! I hate when you/we work so hard and have it come out like crap.

We all have different standards, but around here, the standards seem to be on the upper side of quality.

I need to do a paint job on mine in the next year or so, need to make it drivable first. The body I have has surface rust only, should be a pretty painless job. I hope!

Great information here!

I thought mine had NO RUST in it, until I tore off the paint and the 1/2" of bondo. That is what I did all last winter is repair rust. and body damage. Unless you are the first owner of the car and know for a fact there is no rust, as long as you are at it, tear off all the paint before you paint. It is not that hard.
Check everywhere for rust. You will be happy you did, if just for the peace of mind

Pawned: I'm second owner of the car. It's a so cal car, it was treated very well by the original owner. Only in the last two years was it exposed to the elements. It is now in my garage.

It's a very good car for restoration since the body is in such great shape, that is the most important thing I looked at, body.

However, it will be striped to bare metal. It had a vinyl top that was removed early on, the roof is near perfect.

Some of the projects I see others working on would put me off completely. I have a lot of respect for those that choose to climb that mountain!

My Duster was built in Southern CA and spent its life in and around Yuma AZ. I am thinking I may be the 4th owner. The guys I bought it from used heavy skim coats of bondo and then did a poor paint job. The paint came off in huge chunks and you could still smell the primer. The rear quarter panels (both) were rusted thru below the marker lights. Both sides has rust thrus just in front of the rear tires. They just filled it with bondo. Did not even cut off the ragged rusted edges.
The spare tire well was rusted away and it was filled in with bondo. The problem is the gas tank was being held up by bondo.
The reason I bring this up is you can not tell what is under there without removing the paint

The stripes and decals have been shipped and should get here on the 22nd. Then I can probably declared the car finished. (as if that is possible)

I don't know about other paint companies but PPG I discontinuing all single stage. As for wet sanding & buffing you cant do it to single stage metallic.

I know, but I can, If I wish, clear coat it and then do that. But I do not want to.
I did go over the car with the clay bar and it took off all the dust and extra stuff I would have wet sanded off.
I am extremely satisfied with the job I did using the Single Stage. I still can buy the PPG single stage at the paint store as of 2 weeks ago
