Rear end choices (modified).

I have a 8.25 3.55 gears and a sure grip behind a 450hp 440 sems to do the job fine so far and is relatively a cheap swap. The 8.25 thread has a ton of info in it.

Very tempted mark. 4.56 i think is a little too high revving. Great for 1/4 mile!
Maybe I can make it worth your wild. Also it has the orignal spring perchs and the ones for the springs moved. I moved my springs in but never cut the old perchs off. Mark

I found a guy in NY, elite drive train. A body complete with disc brake kit. Choice of 489,741,742. All rebuilt. My gear choice as well as choice of sure grip type and gear ratio.

I'm considering the 742 with 3.91 and disc type posi, not cone type. Pedestal centers moved in .75 per side.
The 742 has slightly less mass to move than the 489. Keep in mind this is from my limited knowledge on the subject, I reserve the right to change my opinion after I hear what you have to say.

318 KB pistons, ported stock head, .20 shaved off head. Machine block as much as i can without getting into alignment problems with manifold, likely be .030 over on the bore, Edelbrock dual plane Spread bore, 625 Carter/edelbrock, 268 cam, Doug's headers, ceramic. Don't have the exhaust system yet planning on 2.5", wanting to do an aar style but may have clearance issues from subframe connectors.
I'm estimating 280 - 300 to the tires.

But later,,,, I will more than likely put a stroker 360 and be looking for over 500 to the tires. Aren't we all.....

I wouldnt go with the 8.8. Not that im knocking it i have one under my 95 bronco but they are known to be weak around the bearing caps. I wouldnt put much power in front of a stock housing but thats just me. Ideally id run a 8 3/4

Still undecided. Considering a Dana 60 buy I don't know much about them.

Can I do a gear ratio change as easily as an 8.3/4"?
Input appreciated, thanks.

No, not even close.

Gear change in a 8.75 take 30 min to an hour. Gear change in a dana takes 4-8 hours.

Lots of possibilitys. dana 60, 8 3/4, 8.8, ford 9" ford.If you would like to discuss some options pm me for phone number. 35+ years doing gears, narrowing etc.paul

Thanks for the offer Paul.
Just got done ordering the rear end.

3.91/742, disc brakes, narrowed perches 3/4". Etc...

Thanks for the input.

Navigating a topic you know very little about has a steep learning curve.

Well, I guess it's too late to ask now, but what body is it going into? The reason I ask is because a 70 and earlier B-body 8 3/4 fits nicely under Dusters, Demons, Dart Sports, and 67-69 Barracudas without having to narrow them and they are big bolt pattern. They are fairly common to find for sale as well and at a lower price than A-body models. All you have to do is relocate the spring perches to use one in an A-body.

1972 dart swinger.

I hope I chose wisely!

I'm already trying to fit as much tire under it as I can, any more width would make wheel choices even harder due to backspacing. Not doing a mini tub.
