Well, ssba, it may just be the way the previous owner broke them in. You take a car that the little old lady never took over 3000rpm, and wind it up on the freeway, you are likely to induce a problem. Which reminds me... I just dropped in a L.O.L. motor -- maybe I should treat it more gently.

My Dad and I enjoyed blowing out my Grandmas 250/6 Buick Apollo before we changed the oil. Funny stuff, punching it on the highway (Gramma never drove outside of her tiny town or over about 30 I believe~! ) and just seeing light blue smoke pour out the tailpipe as the motor coughed and cleared its throat. I dont think that car ever got warm, those 8 minute trips to Piggly Wiggly and church couldnt do it....
