I think you are missing the point of the class.
The whole idea is to use nothing but the most common, cheap parts. Yes, 4 speeds were available, but those cars would have a runaway advantage, forcing everyone to run out and buy one or be completely uncompetitive.
As for driving or trailer, that's up to the individual.
The overall appeal to this would be the heads-up, no breakout nature, so brackets would be out of the question.
