727 transmission rebuild

All right guys I'm kind of new to this. I have a 727 that needs rebuilt. I took my car, a 1973 dart to a transmission shop. The guy said the transmission needed rebuilt. This was back in September of last year. He said it would cost around $1000 to rebuild. I talked to him a couple of days ago and he gave me a quote of over $2000. Now I'm not sure how much it really cost to rebuild this tranny but I have found some online for cheaper than that. My car is not going to be raced. It is only for daily driving. He was talking about putting in a more expensive torque converter. I guess my questions would be, what kind of torque or stall converter should I use and is the price he quoted me is reasonable for work done in Iowa
If you're not going to tackle the rebuild yourself, then RUN don't walk from this shop. At a $1000.00 to for all parts and labour I think that's a fair price, however to go back to the guy and find out now he wants a grand more. No way. Parts and labour didn't double in less than a year, and as far as a more expensive torque converter there is no such thing unless it's a custom high stall. You haven't said what you've got power wise and if it's pretty much a stock unit, a stock converter will do just fine. Stock Chrysler converters are well made. Ask him what this special converter has had done to it that makes it worth more money.
I'd check around for prices in your area and see what other shops would be charging for a complete rebuild, then make your decision.
By the way, the prices you got quoted, was this just for the transmission/converter rebuild, or did it include the re and re of the trans from your car.
