Is this a relay mod?

This has always been on my Duster since I bought it. It clicks when you go from low beam to high beam. One wire runs directly to battery positive. A previous owner have taped all the electrical wiring together and since everything works I have never touched it. So, Im guesing some one has relayed the high beam right? I know I just guess, since I have not followed the cables. But it's not a stock thing right? Sorry for the bad picture.

Hi trebor75. It looks like a headlight relay that was installed when the last owner put in some quartz or halogen bulbs. In the eighties it was common to upgrade the headlamps but a relay was required for that early bulb technology. Looks exactly like the one I had!
 
Thank you guys. The coming winter I'm going to paint and tidy up the engine bay. Is there any point in replacing this with a smaller more modern relay?
 
That's a BAD place to pull power on a mopar with a factory charging system.

If it's for the headlights, I'd remove it and go a different direction if you want an upgraded power source for your headlights.

I realize you are "over there" but that doesn't look like a relay, more like a voltage regulator ?? Can you get it off or at least unbolted and some "far better photos?"

From the battery? Would it be better to go from the alternator itself?

I will get back with better photos. No it's not a voltage regulator. I replaced that a while ago. And this on clicks when I go to high beam, just like a relay.

Just how big is it?
It looks like an old electro-mechanical device,Like an old-time voltage regulator. Those tended to stick the points shut and fry the wiring.

Get rid of the relay & wire back to stock. Put in Wagner H6024LED headlights, no relay required. Or just use stock headlights.

Disagree. Mopar headlight wiring is a bit on the small side. These cars can benefit from headlight relays. Maybe you can get by with LED, but 40-50 year old switches and connections are not doing a person any good, either.

The Wagner headlights are plug & play...wired for polarity & less current flow. Research LED & the technology. Anyway just my 2 bits..
 
A $250 LED headlight... sheesh

A good relay kit and standard halogens are a bunch less money and will work great.

I'm not saying that "brand new" original Mopar wiring would not be adequate for LEDs, I'm basing this on the fact that many of these girls still wear their 40-50 year old bulkhead connectors, light switches and other connections........all of which can be deteriorated in that many years.

And I agree with cracked........Halogens are fine for now. LEDs have got to get cheaper
