I could be mistaken but thought I read somewhere you could order 8.25 axles with SBP from Dr Diff. I would call him and get the scoop straight from him. If you (or someone else calls) let us know what you find out
 
No they don't interchange. The a body 7.25 axles are retained at the outer bearing. The 8.25 uses a C clip inside of the pinion gear. And the outer bearings are different. The 7.25 bearings are press fitted on the axle while the 8.25 slides into the axles ends.
 
Plus the axle diameters are diffrent.
The 8.250" has a larger diameter axle and if you add a locker... it is a pretty heavy duty rear for most street applications.
I'd trust it to 400hp.
The 7.250" i had issues with on a 170hp slant six.
