Have a 73 Duster with 10" rear brakes that need replacing. Just found out that there isn't an auto brake adjustment cable system, just a manual star adjuster against the spring. Has anyone come across this before? I ordered a maxi-pack only to find that the springs do not match up to my factory setup. Any input would be appreciated. Not happy with manual adjustment setup and would like to go with an automatic self adjuster.

it should look like this

Pictures? It should have a self adjuster. You usually have to order that stuff separate from the hardware kit. Self adjuster repair kit H2528 is what you want

Ok, I know that it should look that that but it doesn't. My primary and secondary spring are short and both identical. The adjuster spring rides on the adjuster (manual system). These are the factory brakes, I've owned the car for over 42 years and these are the brake package (less shoes) from the factory.

Crewchief....I'm in the same boat as you. I bought an A body 8 3/4 that the seller claimed was out of a '68 Barracuda. I pulled the drums and it looks just like yours....no auto-adjusters. I'm also missing the metal bar just below the wheel cylinder that has the unusual spring on one end (I don't know what it's called). Did you ever get it figured out??

Tied to install an auto adjuster kit, couldn't make it work. Cable was not long enough, seems it was for a 9 inch setup. Ended up putting the manual system back in. Had to use a few different kits to get the correct springs.
These kits are too generic these days. One size fits all "that's not the case".
Good luck Batoven

When I did the 10" drum brakes in my 65 Dart, I bought the "hardware kit" for a ~72 Dart at Autozone. Came w/ the newer style self-adjusters (post 2 & 3) which I prefer anyway. I had to re-use my old "shoe pins" since my shoes are a different width. A kit is for "1 axle" and PN varies w/ front & rear. Cost ~$12 ea then. Did you check rockauto? I recall they list both kits and individual parts. Not even sure most parts are Mopar-specific since the standard Bendix drum design.

Re "no factory self-adjusters", my 1996 minivan rear drums has none, just the star adjuster and locking tab. I am still on the original shoes and drums at 212,000 miles, so perhaps they knew they weren't needed and would just be tweaked every inspection. I bought new shoes and drums long ago, but every time I've checked I still have ample lining left. I recall they also are slightly different design, with each shoe individually "grounded", rather than the "floating" arrangement of the front shoe acting on the rear, so probably both shoes have the same lining length.
