Gets hot then starter is very slow turning over.

I have a 74 Duster 360with Patriot headers and the large original starter. Once it gets up to temp the starter turns very slow. Usually wont start the car till it cools down.
From what I read it's the solenoid, but is it the one on the inner fender or the one on the starter itself?
Does a mini starter help? If so what's the best value mini starter?
Anything else I should look for?

I disagree with that.

My guess is heat soak from the headers. I wrapped my starter with some high temp stuff, and it seemed to help.

A mini starter would certainly be an improvement.
 
Age of battery? Cranking amps? I have headers & never have had that issue. Also using stock 70's starter. Here in San Antonio,Texas summers are brutal!:rolleyes: U have always used highest cranking type batteries. How about condition of alternator or voltage regulator?

That is a good price @Mopar Tim.

I pulled one off a mid 90's pickup at a pick-n-pull and paid $25. That was over two years ago and its still cranking like no get out!!
 
I got a big starter with shitty headman headders that wrap around that dam starter.... my car starts fine after running it on a 100 deg day....
Id say your starter took a ****....
if your timing isnt avanced enough, youll be shootin flames down headders and gettin starter hotter than it should be.... just a lil info
 
those minis crank like nothing is holding them back, they take less amps too. Car will never sound the same starting afterwords but its a small price to pay.

This would be my first suspect also, since they act like that when they get older and the armature gets off center.
The OE starters weren't power houses in the first place and heat just makes it worse.
The mini would change all that since like mentioned they crank WAY faster and use less amps to do it.
I got mine off a Ram 1500 pickup with a 5.2 for $15 out of the wrecking yard four years ago and it still works just great on my mildish 5.9 Magnum.

I do miss that tell-tale Chrysler starter sound. But damn, the mini spins so fast the engine in running in no time!
 
No reason to run the old style starter anymore unless you like the looks of it. The modern mini starters are better in every way.
 
Is there any benefit from an aftermarket starter over say a starter from my 89 Dodge truck?

Id say no. There are actually 2 versions of the mini, one is a tad longer in the armature for a bit more torque. Both fit, just be aware of the position of the leads. sometimes they terminate inboard and can make installation a little tricky as you need to remove the lug extensions.
