Actually....as far as I know the engine placement (L to R) doesn't really make a difference when it comes to the u-joints. As long as the eng/trans center line is parallel to the pinion shaft. The eng./trans can be off set to either side as long as the eng/trans center line remains parallel to the pinion shaft (perpendicular to the rear axle), same thing goes for the "up and down" orientation. If you keep the eng/trans center line parallel to the pinion shaft you won't have any vibrations. So you could conceivably move the engine to the left to make room, but you would have to take care that drive shaft doesn't rub against anything. Transmission linkage would also have to be considered and of course fan should clearance or anything else that associated with the engine moving left to right. The rear of transmission would have to move to the left the same amount as the front of the engine to keep the eng/trans center line parallel to the pinion shaft.
