Most of the modern setups have at least a single stage retard. You can pull 8-10 degrees out at the hit for, say, .55 seconds then put it back.

It usually doesn't take much or for very long. I use a Mallory 685 box and I can do more than just that. And it if need more, I have severe Mallory 687 boxes with the controllers. MSD has similar stuff.
My GenIII Hemi uses a crankshaft sensor, so no distributor. The MSD Hemi-6 controller that runs the ignition is solid state. The curve is programmable as is a 2 step, but there is no stage retard feature. I think I'll just loosen the Caltrac bars a little and maybe tighten the torsion bars up a little to slow the weight transfer, along with a shorter burnout. I've already bumped the timing up 3 degrees from normal.
