Curiosity, does anyone make a gas tank for a 69 Dart that carries extra room for gas? What I mean is if I cut out the spare tire area and make the trunk floor flat.

Thanks

You mean a square gas tank. Not with the area cut into for the spare tire?

Take measurements and compare with other tanks. Food for thought... E body Challengers also fuel up on the drivers side. Holds more fuel than a E-Cuda. Why I don't know but that's what the books say.

I'd like to know if there is a fuel cell that has the ability to install the fuel neck where I want it.

While my son was replacing the pump sender assembly in a 96 Cherokee, I did some quick measuring. Looked like that plastic tank would work with spare well deleted. Custom mod work at filler neck of course. I liked the fact that this particular setup ( 6 cyl' build ) didn't require a fuel return line. Regulator sits atop the assembly and dumps excess fuel right there inside the tank.

I was thinking cut the spare tire compartment out, buy a new tank, install and see where I could add on to the tank... Just an idea as iam looking for something to change even though I shouldn't

I suppose it could be square, but was thinking keep stock look underneath but add a few gallons.

Ah, and here I was thinking the opposite: cut that spare tire well about 3 inches deeper to fit a decent tire, and take it out of the tank. I mean, how many people use their cars for long road trips? Oh... well, there's me, I guess. Maybe not a good idea.

LOL... Maybe I could do that so I can fit a rear and a front in the spare tire area...turn it to 9 gallon tank

Well, if you can get a real 30 mpg, a 270 mile range isn't to bad.

I would think that starting with a new tank and cutting out the indentation in the tank and welding in a new piece to fit in the area where the spare tire was should be fairly easy, if you can weld.

My mod/mad idea was delete the spare well completely and even raise the trunk floor a inch or two if necessary. It really did look like that Jeep tank would work, straps and all.
I kept a space saver spare, hold down and fabric cover from a Lincoln Town Car to mount up in the trunk like in the Town Car. Majority of a-bodies have ample trunk space.

Poster board can be your friend. After removing the bottom of the well I made a tank in poster board, had the bottom (tub) dropped in and set the top on (indexed for final assembly),laid out the fill neck , fuel pump housing and float assembly (to clear the baffle). Brought it back to the fab shop to finish weld. Uses the factory fill point, holds 16 gallons, isn't seen from the rear and is no where near the 4 link or coil overs. The divider still drops flat over the tube. These are older pics during assembly. The tank is strapped top and bottom.

So, you created your own tank from
Scratch then?

I like the look and 16 gallons is more than stock right? Stock is, oh, 10-12 gallons?

Not sure what stock was, yes ,from scratch. If you where wondering, the fuel lines exit through the upper shock bolt holes. I welded a 6" section of !/4" PT black pipe into each hole .

Wow! Very creative. Nice work and thanks for sharing that.

no one wants to get rear ended, but its definitely stronger then to OE (12ga steel) which would seem more prone to rupture in the factory location

you can get a custom tank built to you specs for a decent price or look at some of the fuel cells that are out there. In my dart build, i cut the spare tire pan out, measured and found i can get a low profile, 25 gallon fuel cell rated for SCCA use from summit for about 200 bucks, with sending unit. Only thing I gotta figure out yet is how im connecting the filler tube.

Can you share the brand/model you found at Summit? I looked through a lot of them and wasn't sure which one you might be referring to. I picked up a '67 Dart project where the previous owner put in a drag race fuel cell. I'm interested in more capacity. Thanks!
