Any reason you went with the 742 case? i was under the inpression the 489's were stronger/better?
 
742 is better than 489 which is better than 741.
Pinion diameter I believe where the bearing yoke bearing sits.

If I am wrong- dont shoot the messenger!
 
489 strongest pinion. But stock cone style suregrip
742 came stock with clutch type sure grip. But smaller pinion shaft
 
Not enough difference between 89/42 case to spend the money to make a swap to same gear ratio.
Both have about the same strength to last in a race car, neither will get hurt in a typical street ride.

Although the 489 is a 1 7/8 pinion and the 742 is 1 3/4. The 1 3/4 pinion in the 742 has a larger inner pinion bearing for better support.
