when I got my car it had an incredible, water and dirt resistant nice satin/flat black finish on the tires - no idea what had been used but now that I've managed to scuff it on one sidewall I'm looking to re-treat it with something similar...anyone found a good tire paint- or other dressing that gives this kind of finish?

You might try 303 Aerospace Protectant. I use it on vinyl and tires and like it better than Armour All. Available all over - Amazon to Walmart.

Mcguires tire shine. Best I have used and I am in the car biz.... We use lotsa tire dressing. Not Mcguires though... Too spendy for dealers. They buy bulk crap.

There used to be a "Tire Black" tire paint we used at the tire/alignment shop. Used to mount the tires white stripe out, customer would ***** they wanted stripe in, pull the car in and paint the stripe black. Hey you know, Flat Rate...

The Mcguires stuff doesnt look greasy just looks like new tires and lasts a long time.
Be carefull of using home remedies ( or Armor all) could damage tires.

I remember that well. Back when some people wanted whites and some wanted blacks we would get all with white on one side and paint it over when someone wanted blacks. We mounted them with the painted side in and nobody ever knew the difference.

Most I have found turn brown after awhile. Surf City had some that worked pretty good.

I use the Mcguires as well and am happy with it.
You want to rub it in pretty good if you don't want the shine, but it works really well and stays for a good amount of time like already mentioned.

I use STP son of a gun one step tire care, no greasy film and it lasts a long time.

My neighbor owns a detail shop. I don't know what brand tire dressing he uses but I know he adds a small amount of diesel fuel to it. IT works amazing...
