In all research that I have found over the years, the 7 1/4 was introduced back in 1960 and your parts using 5/16" bolts are for those 1960-61 7 1/4 rear ends. After those production years they began to use 3/8" bolts.
I can only assume that Chrysler found that the 5/16 bolts were not strong enough and made the modifications due to larger torque engines.
My old 66 Belvedere had a 318 with a 7 1/4 and 3/8" bolts on the ring gear, the same as my 1973 Duster.
All I know is that your ring gear cannot be used on later model 7 1/4 rears.

Crewchief, are you saying that the bolt holes in the ring gear itself is 3/8?
If so, how come Yukon, motive gear, and other companies only offer 1 type of gears in different ratios?
Are you sure those aren't shouldered bolts that go in there?

Yes, I'm absolutely sure. The ring is mounted with 3/8-24 x 7/8 LH thread bolts.

Hey Dude, the 3.55's I purchased from You have the 3/8" RG bolts, so...Yes Sir...................FYI on .org an over-seas member also discovered the early units
had a different spline count on the pinion as well........................

I am torn about what to believe about if this ring and pinion will fit my car. I have a 1966 Dart with a 7 1/4 rear. Will they fit, or won't they? I would appreciate several opinions before I buy.

Valiant63, have you opened up yours yet?
If you have (8) 3/8 bolts, you will need a ring that uses 3/8" bolts.

This one in my car isn't opened up yet. I got a rare sure grip unit that I took out of another 7 1/4 rear that had eight left handed 3/8 in bolts with 2.73 gears. Same gears in my Dart.

I'm sitting on new 3.55 ring and pinion, debating on leaving the 3.90 gears thats on my sure grip I purchased a few months ago. If I don't use it, it will be available. Not sure when I'm going to tear into it.

According to lgu32 on .org, the early (60-61) pinions have 29 splines, the common ones(and ones currently available new) have 27 splines, to go along with the apparent
change from 5/16" to 3/8" RG bolts...........................
