1962 valiant shifter change

What keeps the shifter from going by the gates for 1st/reverse and 2nd/3rd gears and ending up in front of our behind the gate/ shift levers on the 1961 valiant floor shift?

Picture shows shifter and all components installed. What keeps the above from happeningView attachment 1715121161

Figured out the problem. shifter and tranny change complete on the 1962 Plymouth V100. Changed out the 3 speed manual column shift to 3 speed
manual floor shift. All components are date coded and correct from a 61 Valiant and it all works perfect.
