Hey guys, I've used the search function to death but haven't come up with what I am looking for. I am putting together a 5.9 magnum. It's going into my 72 duster I am building for the $3,000 hooptie challenge at the Zip Tie Drags in Tuscon. It's a full bodied duster (lightened by rust) with the 5.9, an RPM air gap intake, the stock magnum heads a 727 with 2500 stall, and an 8.8 explorer rear with 3.something gears (that't the plan anyway). I'm curious what hyd roller cams have worked for you all in 5.9's with stock heads. I could possibly upgrade the valvesprings as well but that $3k limit is approaching quickly. Would like it to run well N/A but have a 150 shot that may be used. Thanks for your time and input

Cant go much over .500 lift. Got to make sure you factor in the 1.6 rocker ratio.

Call Oregon Cams. They have a consummate list of hydraulic roller profiles. Call for a recommendation, bet they can cam you for 150.00-175.00 on a quality regrind. (A new one is 300-400.00..) Hughes 1110 spring set ,and matching combo will get you there . Keep lift .500-.520" with a 1.6 factory rocker ratio. Have an idea of rear tire size ,what rear gears you want to use ,and stall speed converter.

Something in 220-224 @ .050 lift on intake, small split on exhaust. Pretty close to most successful Magnum builds here.

With a 2500 stall, the biggest cam duration @ .050 is in the 230 area. Unless you do something tricky like Rhonda lifters.
Make sure you do the math on lift!

He meant "Rhoades lifters ".. Misspell on auto correct blows...

There's a Lunati cam that ends up at .517 lift with 1.6 rockers.

Thank you for all of the replies. I will go the regrind route at some point. After hard consideration I think the cam swap will have to wait. Need to have the car ready to rock by the 17th and we are pushing the $3k max budget. I have two weekends to get the engine cleaned up and installed, exhaust built, pick up an 8.8 axle, weld on spring perches, get a driveline built etc. Going to be tight. I guess the stock cam stays for now.

The 5.2 stock cam is slightly bigger in a couple areas.

Could be real cheap from a U pull.

Have run 560 lift in the stock magnum,no problem. Over 225@.050 must check and adjust ICL to get enough room. The Lunati lifters are Morel and no trouble with a magnum block. The 5.2 cam is still tiny and no big upgrade. Some(but not all) magnum cams can be reground to something usefull.I have a pallet full that have been on the cam dr. I'd skip the Oregon guys and go to someone that doesnt waste time trying to copy real cam designers. Yes.I have worked in real cam companies.

.560 lift with OE slugs?
Must pay close attention to piston to valve contact?
Thanks

Just so you know the Lunati roller lifters will not work with the magnum motor

Should the stock magnum lifters not work?

One of my research projects associated with this will be to verify if the LA roller and magnum lifters are indeed the same, IE oil through the push rods. I can't seem to find a definitive answer.

The MOPAR performance roller lifters do work with this cam

What are a couple of good cam grinders out there that are affordable and based on my engine combo and what I want to achieve can recommend a good grind?

Any cam manufacturer can and will ya do what you want.

The most simple and cost effective cam is a Hyd. flat tapper cam.
A solid lifter flat tapper cam is the next cheapest followed by minor maintenance with rocker lash adjustments periodically.

If you already have a roller cam engine, then just swapping out the cam is the most cost effective. Staying with a Hyd. roller cam will keep it inexpensive.

Can you expand on these two posts?
If you take the MOPAR magnum roller lifter and the lunati roller lifter and put them side by side you will see the oil feed hole in the lifters are in a different location
I tried to use the lunati roller lifters and the rockers never got oil to them but I had good oil pressure still then I switched to MOPAR performance lifters and it works fine and have oil to rockers
