What is correct orientation of dip stick handle?

I have a 65 A100 with a slant six 225. I'm confused as to the correct orientation of the dip stick handle. When I put it in one way, the oil reads beyond full. When I flip the handle and install it the other way, it reads oil is low. Is the dip stick in the correct orientation if the markings on the stick face me when I pull it out, or is it correct if the markings are on the opposite side of the stick when I remove it to read how much oil I have?
