Well I haven't posted to much on here but tomorrow going to drop off the 340 to finally get the engine rebuilt found most of the missing parts. Hopefully by the time I get our income tax return the 340 will be ready to pick up.. then back to working on the body.

What's the plan with the 340?

We are restoring the car back to original.. except for changing it from a bench seat to buckets and center console. As for the 340 its going more or less back to original. Also the Duster isn't lonely as one would think there's an 2017 Indian ABS Scout that I got for my birthday last year, 64 Fairlane 500 S/C that was the last car my dad and I restored together, a 16 ft boat and 17 ft sailboat that I had started before the wife bought the Duster.

I am on a second set of comp hydraulic lifters on a 340 build at the shop. It has adjustable rockers . 4 lifters sink down while sitting for a short time. Comp said they had a bad run of lifters they recieved. They sent another set but no labor or gaskets. "China?? "

We are starting a 400 build for member"1969383valiant" it will get solids. They are just more reliable and have consistent lift which makes the charge better balanced. A uneven charge causes vibrations that the moving parts don't like. One reason Solid cams engines are so smooth in the balance at high RPMs is even air fuel charge at all times.

Sure Hydraulics work good in some engine applications. "Street or cheap drag" But there is nothing like a solid lifter cam. /6's, 273 hp, 273 2bbl, early LA and Poly 318's were solid lifters even the 426 Hemis were solid lifter until 1969. One reason you can get away with closer valve to piston clearance is because they have a more consistent lift. They don't rely on oil pressure to be the same and they don't pump up when over rev-ed. Unless you run Zero lash. But then you give up power on the bottom

There are some that say solids are a pain because you have to go over the adjustments. 6 years on my motor and the lash was the same when checked. The early motors with solids had inferior fit adjusters with no lock nuts. That is where solids got there bad name. The trick to solids is a good rocker assembly. There is no better sound the a solid lifter motor.

I have never been impressed by any comp cams or lifters. Had a friend who built a 1970 pontiac gto with a buit up 400. Used all comp stuff cam wiped lobes within a few weeks!! Called summit where he got it. Sent him another cam kit. Upon break in cam wore lifters and lobes!! He was very angry. Called summit said either give me my money back or something better. They sent him a crane cam & lifters. No issues till today. They also suggested isky.

I may switch to solid some time in the future. Hydraulics are ok, but solids just take them to the cleaners when serious power is needed!
