On my 6.1L SRT, I picked up over a tenth of a second in the 1/4 mile and gained almost 3 mph at the traps by switching to a K&N. As far as letting additional dirt through, the inside of my air tube from the filter to the plenum shows no difference in dirt inside after nearly 70k miles using the K&N.

If I was in an extremely dusty environment, I would choose a paper filter for the protection...but I don’t live or drive in that kind of environment, so I choose to gain the extra performance.
Nothing new there Tim. I can't recall the original source off the top of my head but the original article may pre-date 2009. One feature of K&N type filter is the tolerance for oil, coolant and other such stuff spraying around. One day I want to run a test - preferably on the dyno while datalogging. Want to see if my current 14" diameter air cleaner housing with K & N is overkill vs. the 12" mopar housing with K&N. And then from that, maybe try a paper element. The point is to minimize resistance when its really demanding air. Can't go too big, but can go too small. That's the only reason I'm running the 14" diameter now.
