Plugs on the tan side looked good to me.
That means it was using all the fuel it was getting and not running too rich. As long as the A/F ratio and timing are right, plugs will look good. But it also means you are able to run lower octane by being rich bit (like all these cars were out of the factory). A fully optimized 9.2:1 engine should require 89 octane if the A/F ratio is perfect and timing is normal.

Also remember that octane rating was determined differently in the early 70s than it is now.
