All I did with mine was to put the Transgo stage 2 shift kit in it, and I have layed into it pretty hard without any issue's.
I have 2.73 gears right now and run 2,100 RPM at 80mph and get 25mpg doing it.
Using pressure switches running off the trans governor port to make OD and lockup completely automatic, or I can turn either/or on or off manually.
As AJ mentioned you can get pretty decent mileage by getting your timing set up well.
I run 18 initial, 34 total (at my elevation) and a grand total at cruise of 52 or so degrees.
