Maybe just as important you've walked yourself through a wiring diagram.
You've made the first steps on the learning curve.
Do it a few more times and it will start to stick.

I can't even begin to guess how a 'universal harness' might have been done. Too many different possibilites depending on the needs.
Yeah I'll be laying everything out this weekend. What I may do is use the wiring from the universal to duplicate what colors and routing I need. Then buy whatever colors it doesn't have and make as close to original as possible.
