As far as safety goes I tell people who don't sled and think it's dangerous to look at the fatality reported and there are always three factors, not on a OFSC trail (riding the road), alcohol and night time. Any two of these and your in trouble all three and there is a high chance of serious injury or death.
When I got back into it 20 yrs ago with my wife and young children some guys kidded me about being a wuss so I went for a weekend with them. All we did was ride fast all day long and saw nothing did nothing just bragging about how far or how fast you went that day, HATED IT.
I realised there are so many places you can't get to unless your on a snowmobile. Now we tour from town to town, meet people and ride with them to find hidden local spots not found on maps, take pictures and have a fuull enjoyable day with real things to talk about.
I do like the speed and every once in awhile taking my RX1 120mph across the lake is a rush and quiets my addiction for fast.
