Hey y’all,
I have been fighting the 904 in my 65 273 barracuda for a couple months now. She is good and blown up. At this point I’d like to 5 speed swap the car. I found an ax15 in a 96 Dakota. 360 bucks for the trans and all that goes with it. I do not want to lose the 273 because it is a stout little motor. From what I understand the 273 is internally balanced and all the magnum stuff is externally balanced.
What will I need to do to convert my car to a 5 speed?
Will it be possible for a 273 to work with ax15?
I’m on a college student budget. So am trying to keep it cheap.
Thank you!

just the flywheel on the 360 is externally balanced i believe. cutting your car up for the ax15 to fit would be my concern. thats why i am going to go with the 833od until this passon guy gets it together. but i doubt he will

In 2012 my buddy ordered a passons hemi 4 speed overdrive waited over a year for it and it was paid for in advance, I think that sucks, he said he has to collect X amount of $$$ to make a order for the gear sets, I think he needs some backing or give it up.

!

I have contemplated this swap myself in my 65 Dart wagon with a 273 but decided to use and save some money with what I have on hand - a complete V8 65 833 setup.

From what I have learned, you’ll need the complete AX15, bellhousing, flywheel, clutch slave and clutch master cylinder, probably the driveshaft to shorten (or at least the front yoke to mate with your driveshaft), back up wiring to mate with yours, possibly the truck clutch pedal (little hazy on that). It will Bolt to your 273 no problem since the Bolt pattern on the bell is the same as a LA. And of course modifying your trans tunnel. There are several threads on doing this conversion so do a search on it. Hope this is of some help!

Edit: the Passon 5 speed would be the way to go if he were geared up to get them in some semblance of production

I would totally do 833 but I can’t find them anywhere! I also know that it will be really pricey to do the 833 conversion.
So the flywheel from the Dakota v6 will work on the 273?
There are no weights on it?

The 3.9/5.2 are neutral balance so either flywheel should work. Too bad you’re on the other coast as I have another original 65 833

I’m currently going to school in McPherson Kansas and have the car with me...

Your 273 will love the 5-speed, but I don't know if I would recommend the install for a newbe, it could drag on for months. The 904 is a cheap easy fix and could be out and in, over a weekend, for a newbe with a service manual and a camera.

Yeah the 904 is really bad. Tried to suck the check balls through the valve body, rear servo piston was destroyed, and I believe the rear pump is shot. I’m going to an auto restoration school so really shouldn’t be that hard with the resources I have to do the 5 speed swap.

I’ve been looking for a complete 92 or so 2 wheel drive Dak with the 5 speed so I would have everything I need at one time. Only stuff around here with a 5 speed is 4WD And that’s not gonna work

I’d like to, the plan is to drive the car back home to California and 75mph at 2750 rpm sounds really good.
I did this swap on my Barracuda.
It is a long term swap... I'm not sure it would work on a college kid budget. There are tunnel & cross member mods that take quite a while.
My blog has most of the details of the swap:
www.dartslantsix.wordpress.com
I had a complete parts truck to steal all the parts from.

I’ve done this swap on my 72 Dart. It can be done on a budget but takes some time to plan out Took me a solid week to do it that’s because I was trying to figure out what will work as far as fitment and parts. Overall it’s great, cheap 5spd swap that made the car more fun to drive and gets better gas mileage. Nice write up Dartslantsix! A lot of the stuff dartslantsix did I had to do also. 2wd Ax15s can be found in 90s jeeps also 65 dartman but the transmission mount is in a different location and you’d have to change the belhousing in order for it to work and also use the correct flywheel. I have pics of mine installed in my Dart on my photo garage if you wanna take a look at it.

Any pictures would be really appreciated!

Hears some old pics I have. I did update a few things in my setup as far as a different tranny mount and stuff but I can take a few more pics later on today

318 magnum. Clutch pedal is out of a mr2. I don’t have pics of the tranny tunnel tho but when I get off of work I can take some but it will be with the transmission installed. I’ll just get more close ups in that area

The shifter would be a deal breaker for me. IMO

I’m just curious to see the shape and size of it from inside the car

As to the shifter; that's nothing a couple of hours can't take care of. I mean if you look at the stocker, and imagine all the bends straightened out, how much different would it look? Hyup a bit of time, a torch, maybe a welder and grinder, and a bigazz bench vise.

That's what I did. I cut it down and heated it up to bend to my liking.
