Cheap-ish 360 mods
Hey guys I'm trying to figure out some ideas I want to do with the 360 I'll be swapping into my Scamp this spring. It's a 91' truck 360 and still in the truck and runs. I don't remember the mileage of it but I'll do a tune up on the engine before it goes in and I'd like to do a double roller timing chain so I don't have to worry about that anymore.
I have a pair of longtubes coming for the engine as well. Being budget minded on this as I'm rebuilding a 904 as well, would you guys recommend getting a different intake and carb and calling it good? Would you rather do a small cam instead of an intake? Ignition upgrade maybe? It's just gunna be a street car so not looking to spend a large amount of cash but would like it to be fun before I swap the engine into the car too, so I'm just looking for some opinions right now.
This is what I have done;
Intake, carb, air cleaner and chrome box ignition with a dual exhaust off the exhaust manifolds. Of course Substituting headers and a Summit/Jegs exhaust is an excellent bang for the buck that I liked a lot.
My engine was running well and I didn’t do a cam swap as that entails a lot more than just a cam and lifter set because it should be bought with springs, new timing chain and gaskets for the whole job.
As far as an ignition goes, I very much like my Pace Performance ready to run MSD clone. Excellent unit!
That was the order in which it was done. After “engine upgrades,” minus the cam, the next parts work in conjunction with the cam. A converter and shift kit. Then rear end gears with wider rubber.
Search the classified section for inexpensive used parts. I have gotten many excellent intake, carbs, headers and air cleaners inexpensivly here. Cam/valve train are always new, never used. Heads I have purchased here have been bare @ good prices.
