3.9 V6
I have a 87 dakota with the 3.9 engine. FWIW my plans are to switch to the 5.9 magnum.
Let me tell you a few reasons why.
1. 87 is carbed, but it used an electronic feedback control. Basically takes place of the power valve. (holley 6260 2bbl carb)
2. hp and tq. from 87 to 91 is 125hp and 195tq. 92 forward is magnum. 180hp and 220tq. and better mileage.
3. little or no aftermarket support.
a. dist. is odd fire, set at 116 and 124 degrees. no vacuum or mechanical advance. All done through the computer. No longer an aftermarket unit is available
b. No aftermarket intake, heads, etc.
If I could have found a stand alone distributor, I would have tried that with a holley 2280 carb, but again, it has not been available for years.
I cant think of one good reason to use this engine for anything......
Good luck if you choose to use it!!! And as always will enjoy reading about your results!!
