I'd offer to help, but I don't have enough time to work on my own these days. You say you want to swap out the smog head, is there anything wrong with the head/gasket/compression? If it were me, this being my only vehicle, and if nothing was really wrong with the existing head then I would put the rockers back on, adjust the valve lash and get it back on the road. There are simpler ways to get around the smog system if you really want to bypass/disconnect it.
