Working on a 66 Barracuda. I replaced all the factory guages with aftermarket guages and put in a aftermarket tachometer in the dash and reused the factory speedometer. Everything works great except for the speedometer. It works fine up to 30 miles per hour then it has a loud growling noise and it won't read correctly and jumps around .I've checked the cable and isn't broken and is well oiled it worked fine before I took it out and put it back in. Looking to see if anyone has experienced this kind of problem my next thought is to use a old cable assembly I have and hook it up to a drill and see what happens. Hoping someone has a good idea what it might be I'm trying not to unhook everything and remove dash until all options are exhausted

Just lubricating the cable won’t always help. I tried that on mine. It didn’t look bad, but speedometer jumped all over. I bought a new one and problem went away.

Sounds like the best idea. Think I'll pick up a new tomorrow and give it a try. Thanks for the information

The thrust function of the bearing is shot. Had one do that and you could turn with screwdriver and peg it to 120. Inspected it and no way to repair it. Repair shops can refurbish for over $200. Buy used one from Stephens salvage for bout $100.

Before you replace the cable, make sure both ends inserted all the way when you hooked it back up. Just because you got it connected, doesn't necessarily mean's the core of the cable seated correctly. Sounds simple, I know. BUT, stranger things have happened.

Had that issue with bouncing and noise. New Mopar cable, new gear in trans and all.

Two things that fixed it for me. A good cleaning to start with and light rust removal and silicon lube on the unit. Dunked my input side only in evaporust then lubed. 90% better. Last part was the cable pushing hard on the unit. Re-adjusted the cable posistion to not press so hard on the back of the unit. Not sure if your 66 has the same platstic push type connection my 69 does but mine is quiet and smooth now.

I will keep that in mind. Thanks

I think it looks like it's coming apart for a good lubing but first I think I will try a new cable. Thanks

Drives me crazy may just run with the tachometer for a while

It will do that. The noise and constant bouncing will drive you nuts when you hear it over the sweet engine noise. Sounds like You will either repair or replace the speedo to be happy!

Exactly something that doesn't work correctly drives me crazy

How to test cable to see if it is bad- remove cable, put one end in a vise. Grab the other end and try to twist in both directions. If the cable will twist in either direction 1/4 turn or more- it is bad. Replace.

That's a great idea I'll give that a try. Thanks

Clean the hardened contaminated grease crud from the instruments input, the square hole. Route the cable into it a straight as possible and snug the collector nut.

Thought i would update my situation with the speedometer. I sprayed some lube into the back of the speedometer and put in a new cable. And hurray I now have a speedometer. I really appreciate everyone's input this site has some really intelligent car people. I would bet that someone on here knows something about anyone's problems with their Mopars. Thanks again for everyone that got back to me
