Trick Flow small block heads
Well guys, here's an b initial assessment of these heads.
First, to clarify, the heads only take LA syle shaft rockers. The useability on a Magnum block is made possible by using a rocker with internal oiling provisions to allow pushrod oiling. Considering Trick Flows reliance on Harland Sharp for rockers, they had to have a special rocker made with internal oiling.
Second, they do require special head bolts or studs, just like the big block heads do. I didn't find this out until after the heads were already ordered. No big deal, but when there is no mention of special hardware beforehand, the assumption is that they will use currently available stuff.
Third, the rocker stands have been relocated, similar to the way the big block heads were, only better. They still aren't as good as they could be, considering you would have to be running .750" lift with the Harland Sharp rockers to have proper geometry. When the solid roller spring only allows a max of .700" lift, it is going to take a different spring and retainer package to get there. Anyone running in the .500-.600"s lift ranges is going to need a little adjustment for it to be acceptable in my book.
Fourth, anyone looking to swap valves, ie for a boosted application, you may have trouble finding a valve in a suitable length, due to the uncommon length used in these heads. There is always the custom option.
Overall, they look very nice, and I'm looking forward to see how they work on a high compression 416 build we are doing at the moment. I'm hopeful they will release a competition port in the near future for the dedicated race engines. Still, they are nothing to sneeze at for an out of the box standard port head.
