Replaced the plastic bushing with the well-documented bearing between the column and the shaft. Thanks FABO!
I've been thinking about it and finally decided the best way to go at the steering shaft and the U-joint. I drilled the U-joint for a 3/8 tap, the steering shaft pin hole was perfectly drilled for a 3/8 tap. So I tapped the U-joint and steering shaft 3/8 - 16 installed a grade 8 bolt through it, then put a lock nut and red Loctite on the other side. I think it will work fine.
