Hi everyone,

I've done quite a bit of research and have found a couple threads throughout the web, but I'm still left with some open questions of 1) what do I buy, 2) how hard is this to do, and 3) do I need to do any drilling?

I have a 440 AVS 750CFM carb which is going on an LD340 intake that does not have a divorced choke location. The obvious choice here is to convert the AVS to electric choke.

What do I need to buy/make, and does anyone have pictures/a step-by-step guide to get me going?

Here is a current picture of area.

I'm not an expert, but it appears that an original AFB cannot be converted, at least with the choke pull-off still in place. I think the new choke housing mounts in three places, using the two unused "bosses" and the vacuum port area. Here is a picture of my '68 BB, 4-sp, AFB. Seems similar to yours, with same clearance issues. Maybe someone can confirm or deny this.

Maybe I'm over thinking it, but you can simply drill out those bosses, remove the vacuum nipple and insert a brass insert....and it should bolt right up....and I missing something?

Choke pull off would get removed....

It might be easier to get another carb with electric choke on it already. On craigslist for less than $100.

Yes it can be done and yes I have done this and yes you need to drill and tap for the screws to attach the electric choke housing. I did this about 19+ years ago. I did show it here.

I deleted the pull off IIRC. It was t needed for the job at hand.

Post #3 here. Another shot on page 2, in post #27, kick down mod on page 4, post #80 Not much info.

Thanks Rumble! Could use your help....The kickdown is unrelated to the choke, correct?

I could buy the Edelbrock Electric choke set, but I would prefer something like what you did....that has a black mechanism not a chromed edelbrock looking thing.

So #1: find a proper looking choke (black), #2: drill and tap for correct screws, #3: remove brass inlet and insert an inner inlet?, #4: use/fab another linkage that would connect to the choke lever on the carb.....should be it?

I'll worry about wiring it in later...I think you have to use a source that is only active when the engine is running--and you shouldn't tap into the coil if I remember correctly.

This is all going on an LD-340 intake that doesn't have a divorced choke well. So this forces me to do something like this. I want to keep with my Carter AVS because I'm looking stock and going fast, even if I have a round black thing on the side of my carb. :)

The mechanical driver side is just to show how I hooked up the trans kick down via a Lokar cable on a non Edelbrock AFB/AVS with a home made plate.

This is going to be a trial by fire with or without sea on your behalf. I don’t have any old carbs hanging around to remember how I did this.

I’m going to the desk top to see if I have something saved there.

Thanks Rumble...i'm hoping to not mess with any of my linkages. They're all suited for the AVS carb, so that side should be fine the way it is. I'm working on a 340 ebody that's all original. My plan is to remove the intake and carb as one unit for originality and to plant an LD340 intake with a 440 AVS carb (that I got from a nice member here). The 440 AVS carb is the one that I'm playing with. :)

Any pics could be very helpful.

This is all I could find.
The blacklinkages are painted by myself after a total disassembly and rebuild.
The electric choke covers the vacuum port. Remove the nipple and then you can mount the electric choke housing.

BEAUTIFUL. Where'd you get that choke housing, and where did you wire it to? Another question: did you make that linkage rod?

You don't seem to recall the screw size/tap size/pitch on what it needs to be, do you?

Awesome...I finally found a partner in crime. It is impossible to find help on electric-chokifying a Carter carb....

Stock Edelbrock. Need one?

If I had one in my hands now, I'd be of more help to you.

I love to tinker! I had to figure this S$%^& out onmy own since I was about a sick day or two away from living on the streets way back when. Making stuff work when it's not ment to be used in such a fashion was fun to figure out. Reminds me back when I buddy of mine figured out how to oput a 350/350 Chevy in a VW Bug. At 16 years old, it was great doing such crazy things for fun.

I have done the same using the Edelbrock kit on an AVS carb. If I remember you only have to tap one hole and pull the vacume nipple. the gasket/o-ring seals the hole and works the pull off on the electric choke.

thanks guys. Yep, I need what it takes to make it work. The Edelbrock kit is like $75 but you only wind up using 30% of the parts I think....

IF you can find a cheap cheap carb.........

Doesn't the "pull off" help the function of the secondary air door? Like, if you remove it, the door wil just flop open and bog?

No
AFB’s are a weighted air door.
AVS’s are a spring loaded air door.
Secondary butterflies are mechanical on all 4 Carter 4 bbl. carbs.

Right, I knew that. Never really "messed" with an AVS. Wasn't sure if it was like a TQ, the pull off helps control the air door. Even though it is spring loaded.

I found a AFB on Craigslist with electric choke. Will post updates when I have it and start doing the transplant.

Hey! I think I just Accidentally deleted an email you just may have sent me. We send it if you would.
