So my 440 is at auto school getting a refresh. I didn't have time in the class to finish it so the work was continued by other students along with myself at the end of the day, this was my first mistake letting someone else touch it.

So i had up to piston 7 in the bottom end and then piston 8 literally wouldn't fit over the journal, the big end of rod 7 was too wide for 8 to fit over so the pistons must have been out of order.

Today the teacher tells me that they got piston 8 on the crank but the crank is now locked up, its just the bottom end at this point.

Is the length, not the diameter, different between the rod journals on stock 440 crank?

No, there all the same width and should have clearance when both rods are installed. Do the piston pins slide freely in the pistons? 65'

The pins are all fine, ill double check the cap tomorrow. Tangs kn the bearing should stay on the same side of the rod correct?

Your teacher doesn’t sound like the brightest bulb on the tree. Double/triple check their work. Post a few pics. Kim
Unfortunately he's a Chevy guy and didn't know anything about mopars but it'll be a week before I can get to the motor thanks to summer break

Do yourself a favor and buy a factory service manual so you can educate yourself as well as others, especially the teacher.
He's not much of a teacher if he didn't suggest this from the beginning though............
Sheesh.
I'll bet there's lots of info on the internet of even you tube videos on how to assemble the RB engine.

I do have a service manual, I had to convince him that there is an allowable spec for taper and that the block didn't need to be bored out, there's a machine shop teacher who is much better though so I need to get him in on it, he has students build and tear down a 360 to run on the dyno.

Ive built big block mopars, big and small block fords, big and small block chevy, and jr dragster motors. All were the same. I've got a machine shop 2 miles from my house. He is a chevy drag racer dude. He has been in business for over 25 yrs in that spot. He is a good dude. But everytime I take him a mopar anything he screws something up. Everytime. Don't know why. The boring bar works the same way no matter what engine is under it. The seat and valve grinder works the same way no matter what's under it. You install sleeves the same way no matter what block you have. I don't get it.

Make sure the pistons have been pressed onto the rods correctly. If a connecting rod got turned, the bearing most likely is "locking" istself on the journal radius. All the numbers on the rods should face outward or towards the pan rail.
