Here in Rome Georgia a local machine shop with a great reputation will do a stock rebuild 273 for $1600 - $2000. He's done work for me but never a rebuild.
Ask around and find some others to quote you. Might find he's higher than the others.
I have the number to a couple other shops, I was going to call tomorrow. I really don't know if the motor needs rebuilt, it seems to run good, has a little trouble starting sometimes (maybe needs a carb tune). It also smells like gas no matter how far I drive it, figured it was just the way an old big motor Mopar runs/smells.
